The category is aimed at researcher-initiated projects of size and high scientific quality.
The principal investigator must have a doctoral degree and should hold at least 20% employment at the applicant institution by the time of submission and throughout the project period.
A principal investigator may be employed by a hospital / private, ideal hospital in the health region other than the applicant institution. If this is the case, a separate written agreement between the institutions involved stating the rights and responsibilities of the principal investigator in relation to the project included.
Funding and duration
Helse Sør-Øst RHF awards 1-3 million NOK per year for up to three years in the catery Open project support.
The budget for the application should be within the given limits and should be realistic for implementation of the project. Descriptions of the various cost elements must be provided, either in the application form itself or in the project description.
Regional research funding from Helse Sør-Øst RHF cannot be used for remuneration / salaries for personnel, operations, equipment etc. in other health regions or abroad. However, it is possible to purchase necessary research services externally. In such cases, this must be made visible in the budget and explained in the application.
Available budget elements
Funding is available for scientific positions (doctoral, postdoctoral and researcher positions).
For doctoral candidates, the award is given as a lump sum, incl. salary, social / indirect costs and running costs. For postdoctoral and researcher positions, the grant can be awarded either as a lump sum or as actual costs relating to salary only incl. social expenses / indirect costs for the position in question. For 2020, the lump sum is 1 125 000 NOK for all these positions.
Applicants may apply for funding of their own scientific position in Open Project Support. Such a position should amount to at least 2 full-time equivalents (FTEs). Furthermore, the position must be taken out as at least a 50% position in the project. It is not possible to apply for compensation for the PI in excess of this this or for any other compensations, such as for the supervision of PhD candidates.
The application can also request funding for technical/support staff, e.g. technical personnel, research nurses, project coordinators etc. For each position, the title of the position title, % share, salary and duration must be stated. Please note that any salaries should include social / indirect costs for the position in question. The project description should highlight the need for these positions and their role (s) in the project.
Funding is available for smaller equipment (min. 100 000 - max. 250,000), costly analyzes, database solutions, biobank etc.
Publication costs should be made visible in the budget if this is included as a cost element in the project. Health Sør-Øst RHF supports costs for publishing 50 000 NOK per year.
Any candidates in positions funded by the project should be employed by the applicant institution during the entire project period.
The application should not name any candidates other than the name of the applicant. The names of doctoral, postdoctoral and / or researcher candidates are reported to Helse Sør-Øst RHF as soon as they are employed.
Scientific positions can be converted from 100% down to min. 50% after the project has commenced.
The institution should ensure that appointments to scientific positions must be according to current regulations, including the established agreement concerning temporary positions made between the Researchers' Union (Forskerforbundet), Tekna and Spekter.
Mandatory attachments for applications for Open Project support
All documents must be converted to PDF format before uploading in eSøknad. The project description is uploaded as a separate PDF file, while all other attachments must be merged in a single PDF file. Submit the requested attachments only. Additional attachments will not be considered by the peer-review committees.
The recommended font is Arial 11 pt / Times New Roman 12 pt or similar, single spacing, min. 2 cm margins. For references and tables, 9 pt may be used.
Note! The application and all uploaded attachments must be completed in English.
The principal investigator's CV should be enclosed.
In addition, CVs for up to 2 other key scientific collaborators may be submitted.

The project description should be written in English. It should be max. 10 pages including figures, tables and list of references.
Collaboration agreement - external principal investigator
If the principal investigator is employed by an institution in the region other than the applicant institution a written agreement between the institutions involved should be attached.
Confirmation of transfer of principal investigator responsibility|
If a principal investigator turns 70 during the project period, a written confirmation from the applicant institution must be submitted stating that responsibilities as principal investigator will be transferred to another researcher when this occurs.
