The category Open Project support has two options:
- Ordinary open project support
- Open project support including personal researcher award
The principal investigator should indicate choice of award in the application form (eSøknad).
The category is set up to fund researcher-initiated projects of size and high scientific quality.
The principal investigator must have a doctoral degree and should hold at least 20% employment at the applicant institution by the time of submission and throughout the project period.
A principal investigator that apply for an ordinary project support grant may be employed by a hospital / private, ideal hospital in the health region other than the applicant institution. If this is the case, a separate written agreement between the institutions involved stating the rights and responsibilities of the principal investigator in relation to the project included.
Applicants for personal researcher awards should put themselves forward as principal investigator. The award cannot be transferred to another candidate at a later stage.
Candidates for any scientific positions should not be named in the application, but must be reported to Helse Sør-Øst RHF immediately after employment. The exception is PIs applying for a personal award. Here, the qualifications of the candidate as a PI will be part of the evaluation.
Candidates employed as a researcher should generally be capable of performing independent research without the level of supervision expected for postdoctoral candidates. The award is not limited in duration, and researchers holding a personal award may reapply for a new grant.
Formal guidelines for PhD and postdoctoral positions awarded by Helse Sør-Øst RHF should be followed.
Personnel in scientific positions funded by Helse Sør-Øst RHF should be employed and have their main work address at the applicant institution throughout the project period. It is possible to convert a scientific position (from 100% down to min. 50%) after an award has been received (see dedicated form: changes to research project).
Funding and duration
Helse Sør-Øst RHF awards 1-3 million NOK per year for up to three years in the category Open project support.
Note that the application budget must be within the given limits. Descriptions of the various cost elements must be provided, either in the application form itself or in the project description.
Regional research funding from Helse Sør-Øst RHF cannot be used for employment of personnel or procurement of equipment etc. in other health regions or abroad. However, it is possible to purchase research services from external parties. In such cases, this must be made visible in the budget and explained in the application.
Applications for personal awards should include the researcher position for at least 2 FTEs, at min. 50% employment.
Available budget elements
Funding is available for scientific positions (doctoral, postdoctoral and researcher positions).
For doctoral candidates, the award is given as a lump sum, incl. salary costs and running costs. For postdoctoral and researcher positions, the grant can be awarded either as a lump sum or as actual costs for the position in question. For 2021, the lump sum is 1 156 000 NOK.
It is not possible to apply for compensation for the PI for project management or supervision of PhD candidates.
The application may also include funding for technical/support staff, e.g. technical personnel, research nurses, project coordinators etc. Please state title, % share, costs and duration for each position. The project description should highlight the need for these positions and their role(s) in the project.
Funding is available for smaller equipment (min. 100 000 - max. 250,000), costly analyzes, database solutions, biobanking, monitoring etc.
If the project includes patients, also recruited from other institutions in the region, compensation of patient recruitment may be included in the application, e.g. using a per patient-cost model.
Publication costs should be made visible in the budget if this is included as a cost element in the project. If publication costs are included, these costs cannot exceed 50 000 NOK per year.
