The career Fellowship is intended for younger (under 45 years, born in 1973 or later), eminent scientists, who are planning to start or are in the process of establishing an independent research group. There are high quality requirements for applications within this category. Career Fellowship applications must include salaries of the principal investigator as well as a PhD student or post-doctoral fellow. In addition, the application may include support of running costs.
Career grants are personal and cannot be transferred to others.
Personnel funded by these awards must be employed by the applicant institution during the entire project period.
The candidate must apply him-/herself as principal investigator.
The principal investigator must have a doctoral degree and should hold at least 20% employment at the applicant institution by the time of submission. If not, a written statement must accompany the application confirming his / her employment at the applicant institution in time for project start.
Helse Sør-Øst RHF awards career fellowships for up to 4 years (FTEs) per candidate. These grants may be set up as a 100% position for 4 years or as a 50% position for 8 years. For the career fellowship grant, a 50% position is assumed combined with 50% clinical work.
Note! As of 2017, the following applies to application for a career fellowship:
The principle investigator must have applied for funding from major competitive international sources during the first three years of the project period (e.g . ERC Starting Grants or Consolidator Grants, Marie Sklodowska - Curie actions , the EU Horizon2020 , Human Frontier Science, Novo Nordisk Fund etc.)
Receipt of a submitted application will trigger award of the fourth and final year of career fellowship, i.e. salary for the principal investigator. Other positions and running costs are not affected by this requirement.
Helse Sør-Øst RHF may award a total of 7.6 million NOK for the full project period, of which up to 2.2 million NOK per year for three years and about 1 million NOK for one year.
The application for a career fellowship should include:
- Salary of the principal investigator (up to 4 years)
- One PhD or postdoctoral position for another candidate (up to 3 years)
In addition, the application may include running costs.
Helse Sør-Øst RHF awards a lump sum as used by the Norwegian Research Council for postdoctoral fellowships. For 2017, the Norwegian Research Council has set the rate at 1 039 000 NOKs for doctoral and postdoctoral grants, while the rates for 2018 will be revised (probably increased by approx. 3%) according to the state budget to be presented in the autumn. The lump sum includes salary costs, social and overhead costs as well as running costs. It is not possible to apply for funding of additional running costs.
If the principal investigator is awarded international funding during the career fellowship, the funding from Helse Sør-Øst RHF will be retained.
PhD or postdoctoral candidates should not be named in the application, however, as soon as the candidate is appointed, Helse Sør-Øst RHF should be informed of the name. A PhD or postdoctoral candidate with prior funding from Helse Sør-Øst RHF may not be appointed. See separate guidelines for PhD and postdoctoral fellowships.
Helse Sør-Øst RHF provides funding to perform research abroad for 3-12 months per candidate during a project period. Applications for these grants can be included in the application, both for a researcher and a career fellowship award. The total grant awarded is increased accordingly depending on the current rate and duration of the stay broad. Cf. Guidelines for overseas fellowships
To be awarded a grant for performing research abroad, the stay must be vital to the research project and must take place in an internationally recognized research group.
Extension of a career fellowship award
A career fellow funded by Helse Sør-Øst RHF may apply for an extension of the career fellowship after the initial research period has expired. Helse Sør-Øst RHF will fund a career fellow for a maximum of eight years, regardless of the employment status (50 or 100%).
