Helse Sør-Øst RHF wishes to encourage young researchers to include a research term at a foreign institution during their project period. From 2017, there will be two separate application deadlines for applications for overseas stipend annually.
A research term abroad should facilitate gain of research competency and internationalization of Norwegian research. To be awarded a stipend for research abroad, the stay must be vital to the research project and must take place in an internationally recognized research group.
Funding of a research period abroad is granted in two ways:
- Overseas fellowship as part of a new research project
The overseas fellowship may be awarded as part of a research project. In an application for PhD, postdoctoral, researcher / career fellowships or fellowships included in the Open project support application, one overseas fellowship may be included per candidate. The total funds granted for the research project are consequently increased depending on current rate and duration for the stay.
- Overseas fellowships as part of an on-going research project
The grant may also be awarded to candidates who have started a fellowship (PhD, postdoctoral or researcher fellowship) funded by Helse Sør-Øst RHF or the applicant institution. In such cases, a separate application form for overseas stipends affiliated with on-going research projects should be submitted.
The principal investigator of the research project and for the overseas fellowship application should be the same, and the project number for the research project must be referred to in the project description.
The principal investigator must have a doctoral degree and should hold at least 20% employment at the applicant institution by the time of submission.
For overseas fellowship applications for a research fellow, the candidate him-/herself must be principal investigator.
Helse Sør-Øst RHF awards one overseas grant for 3-12 months per fellowship period (PhD, postdoctoral, researcher and career fellowship).
The rates for overseas research grants cover documented establishment costs and additional expenses incurred by research abroad. The application may also include travel expenses (cheapest mode of travel). Helse Sør-Øst RHF will grant funding for one return travel to max. two destinations, given that the research term is conducted in two different countries.
Candidates who have children under the age of 16, and who will not be accompanied by their children and spouse / partner may apply for funding of several shorter stays and return travels. The need for a flexible solution must be justified in the project description. Family is defined as a research fellow with partner and any children.
Salaries during the stay abroad must be covered by an ordinary fellowship or by the candidate's employer.
Evaluation of applications for overseas fellowships - on-going projects
Applications for overseas fellowships for candidates affiliated with on-going research projects will be evaluated by a separate committee as these projects have already been reviewed and funded. This will imply that the turn-over is shorter.
