PhD fellowships

Guidelines and mandatory attachments for applications for PhD fellowships 2018

In case of any discrepancies between the Norwegian and English versions, the Norwegian version shall take precedence.

The PhD Candidate

Helse Sør-Øst RHF accepts applications for PhD fellowships with or without a named candidate. When applying for a PhD fellowship grant without a named candidate, the candidate's name must be reported to Helse Sør-Øst RHF after appointment.

All PhD candidates must be eligible for admission to a university PhD/doctoral program. The candidate's academic qualifications however, are not evaluated by the peer-review committee.

The candidate must be employed by and have his/her main work address at the applicant institution during the fellowship period. (Excemption: research term abroad.)

Helse Sør-Øst RHF does not provide support to candidates who already hold a doctorate / PhD or have received a full doctoral fellowship from Helse Sør-Øst RHF or another funding agent previously.

A single PhD fellowship award cannot be shared among several candidates at the same time.

Principal investigator

The principal investigator must have a PhD/doctoral degree and should hold at least 20% employment at the applicant institution by the time of submission. The doctoral candidate him-/herself cannot be the principal investigator.

PhD supervisors

The principal investigator is responsible for the daily operations and implementation of the research project and will normally be the academic supervisor or co-supervisor of the PhD candidate. Supervisors may be employed outside of the South-Eastern Norway health region. In these cases, the commitment to the project should be specified in a separate written agreement, which must be drawn up at the project start.

Helse Sør-Øst RHF awards PhD fellowships for up to 3 years (FTEs) per candidate. The grant may be set up as a 100% position for 3 years or as a 50% position for 6 years.

PhD awards of a shorter duration (min. 1 year/FTE) are only given to candidates having started their doctoral degree without funding from other sources or who have received a stipend for a period shorter than 2 years/FTEs from the applicant institution. The conditions should be stated in the project description.

NB: There are separate guidelines for duration of strategic announcement of PhD grant to non-university hospitals. See announcement text.

Helse Sør-Øst RHF awards lump sums as used by the Norwegian Research Council for PhD fellowships. For 2017, the Norwegian Research Council has set the rate at 1 039 000 NOKs for doctoral grants, while the rates for 2018 will be revised (probably increased by approx. 3%) according to the state budget to be presented in the autumn. The lump sum includes salary costs, social and overhead costs as well as running costs. It is not possible to apply for additional funding of running costs.

Studying abroad

Helse Sør-Øst RHF provides funding to study abroad for 3-12 months per candidate during a project period. Applications for grants to study abroad can be included in the application for a PhD fellowship. The total grant awarded is increased accordingly depending on the current rate and duration of the stay.

To be awarded a grant for studying abroad, the stay must be vital to the research project and must take place in an internationally recognized research group. Cf. Guidelines for overseas fellowships
