Principle Investigator (PI)

The PI must have a PhD and be employed in at least 20% of the position at the applicant institution from the application deadline and throughout the project period. In addition, the PI’s main position must be in the region. The main position may be in the health sector or other sectors.
The application category also allows for applications as an external PI for a doctoral project at a non-university hospital in the region (cf. the call text). If such an application is submitted, the PI’s rights and responsibilities in the project must be specified in a written agreement between the PI’s institution and the applicant institution.
The PI is professionally responsible for the day-to-day operations and implementation of the project and must be the main or co-supervisor for the PhD candidate. It is assumed that the guidelines for the main and co-supervisor at the relevant university are followed.

Duration and financing

PhD grants must, as a general rule, have a duration corresponding to three full years (FTEs). The grant can be taken out as a 50% or 100% doctoral position in the project.
Doctoral grants of shorter duration (min. one year's work) are only awarded if the candidate has already started his doctoral work without funding from other sources or has only received internal funds equivalent to up to two year's work from the applicant institution. If this is the case, these funding arrangements must be explained in the project description.
Helse Sør-Øst RHF does not provide support to candidates who have already completed a doctorate or who have received other doctoral grants from Helse Sør-Øst RHF or other funding sources in the past. It is not permitted to share the doctoral grant among several candidates.
Helse Sør-Øst RHF awards a lump sum for this category which includes salary costs, indirect costs and operating costs. For 2024, the rate is NOK 1 294 000 for doctoral grants. There is no opportunity to apply for additional operating funds in this category.

Doctoral candidate

Applications for doctoral grants must be submitted without a named PhD candidate. The name of the candidate must be reported to Helse Sør-Øst RHF as soon as the candidate is employed.
The doctoral candidate must be employed and have their main physical workplace at the applicant institution for the entire project period, with the exception of any research stays abroad.
The doctoral candidate cannot be the PI her-/himself.
