The stay abroad must take place in an internationally recognized research environment and be of significant importance for the completion of the research project.
Who can apply?
The project manager (applicant) must:
- be the project manager of an ongoing research project funded by Helse Sør-Øst RHF, or project manager/regional collaborator in an ongoing project funded by KLINBEFORSK
- be employed in at least a 20% position at an eligible institution from the time of application and throughout the entire project period
- hold a PhD and have their main position in the region
The application must be submitted through an applicant institution, i.e. a health trust/private non-profit hospital in Helse Sør-Øst or a private institution eligible to apply for regional research funding.
Requirements for the application
- The applicant must be the project manager/regional collaborator for the ongoing project to which the candidate is affiliated
- The project number for the main project and the name of the candidate must be provided in the application
- The candidate must have at least a 50% position as a PhD fellow, postdoctoral fellow, or researcher funded by Helse Sør-Øst RHF or KLINBEFORSK
- The candidate must be employed at an eligible institution in Helse Sør-Øst
- The stay abroad must last a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 12 months, and must be carried out within the project period granted by Helse Sør-Øst RHF or KLINBEFORSK
- The latest departure date is one year after the fellowship is awarded
Funding rates for international fellowships
The fellowship is intended to cover documented establishment costs and additional expenses related to a research stay abroad. Salary during the stay must be covered by a stipend or the employer.
Rates for 2027:
- Single (without family): NOK 25,000 per month
- With family: NOK 43,000 per month
In addition, travel expenses (cheapest mode of transport) may be covered. Helse Sør-Øst RHF covers only one round-trip journey to up to two destinations, provided that the research stays take place in two different countries.
Candidates with children under 16 who choose to carry out the stay without children and spouse/partner may apply for support for several shorter stays and multiple round trips. The need for such flexibility must be justified in the application.
A candidate may receive support for international fellowships totaling a maximum of 12 months.

Applications must be submitted electronically via a web-based system (eSøknad).

The evaluation of applications is primarily based on the justification for the stay. Results are normally sent out approximately 1–2 months after the application deadline.

The application may be written in Norwegian or English.
The attachment containing the justification for the stay must be uploaded as a separate PDF file (in eSøknad it should be uploaded under “Project description”). All other attachments must be combined into a single PDF file.
Formatting requirements:
A4 format, minimum 2 cm margins, single line spacing, font type Arial, Times New Roman, or Calibri size 11 (or equivalent). For references and tables, font size 9 may be used.

The project manager’s CV must be attached. In addition, the CV of the PhD candidate, postdoctoral fellow, or research candidate must be included if the candidate is not the project manager of the ongoing research project. Each CV must be a maximum of 2 pages.
